Active Vector Package

Hardware
Vector probe with integrated active headstage electronics that digitize signals at the probe tip for low-noise chronic recording.

Overview

The Active Vector Package (pkg_avx) combines a NeuroNexus Vector-Series silicon probe with an onboard preamplifier ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit). Unlike passive packages, the headstage electronics are bonded directly to the probe body, digitizing neural signals at the source before transmitting over a thin digital cable.

How It Works

Digitizing at the probe tip eliminates the main source of noise in neural recording systems: the analog cable between probe and amplifier. In conventional passive setups, the cable acts as an antenna and picks up electromagnetic interference from motors, lights, and equipment. Active packages output a digital bitstream that is immune to cable noise.

Specifications

  • Channel Counts: 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 channels (model dependent)
  • ADC Resolution: 16-bit
  • Sampling Rate: Up to 30 kHz per channel
  • Cable: Thin digital cable (2–4mm diameter), up to 2m length
  • Power: Low-voltage supply through the digital cable
  • Connector: Intan-compatible digital interface

Benefits

  • Noise Reduction: Eliminates cable-capacitance noise and EM interference
  • Cable Freedom: Animals can move freely without signal degradation
  • Chronic Stability: Compact headstage mass reduces brain micro-motion
  • Long Cable Runs: Digital signals maintain integrity over 1–2m cables

Compatibility

Requires a DAQ system supporting the Active Vector digital interface, such as NeuroNexus Allego or compatible Intan-based systems. Not directly compatible with passive analog amplifier inputs.
