Matrix/AV Package
3D Matrix multi-shank probe with integrated active headstage electronics for high-channel-count chronic recording with minimal cable noise.
Overview
The Matrix/AV Package (pkg_mav) combines a NeuroNexus multi-shank Matrix probe with an onboard active preamplifier ASIC — the same active electronics concept as the Active Vector Package, applied to large-channel-count Matrix arrays. Signals are digitized at the probe body, enabling 128–256-channel recordings through a single thin digital cable.
Why Active Electronics for Matrix Probes?
Matrix probes with 128+ channels present a particular challenge for passive recording: the many parallel analog lines running from probe to amplifier create significant capacitive loading and crosstalk. Onboard digitization eliminates these issues by converting all channels to a multiplexed digital stream before transmission.
Specifications
- Channel Counts: 64, 128, 256 channels (model dependent)
- ADC Resolution: 16-bit per channel
- Sampling Rate: Up to 30 kHz per channel
- Digital Output: Single digital cable (multiplexed serial)
- Power: Supplied through digital cable
- Headstage ASIC: Intan-derived or equivalent low-noise design
Applications
- Large-Scale Chronic Recording: Track hundreds of neurons across multiple sessions
- Population Coding Studies: Decode cognitive and motor representations from large ensembles
- Cross-Area Synchrony: Measure phase relationships between hippocampus, PFC, and thalamus simultaneously
- Freely Moving Experiments: Digital cable enables full range of motion without noise penalty
Compatibility
Requires a DAQ system with the digital active interface (e.g., NeuroNexus Allego or compatible system). Not directly compatible with passive analog amplifier inputs.
