Passive Omnetics connector assembly for 3D Matrix multi-shank probe arrays with 64–256 recording channels.
Overview
The Matrix Package (pkg_mtx) provides the standard passive connector assembly for NeuroNexus 3D Matrix multi-shank silicon probe arrays. Matrix probes feature multiple shanks arranged in a 2D or 3D grid pattern, enabling simultaneous recording from spatially distributed sites across multiple brain structures or cortical areas in a single insertion pass.
Assembly Design
- Connector: One or two Omnetics nano-strip connectors (64-pin or 128-pin per connector)
- Shank Count: 4–64 shanks depending on probe model
- Channel Counts: 64, 128, 256 channels (standard configurations)
- Connector Interface: PCB-based fan-out from multi-shank array to Omnetics headers
- Weight: 1–3g (varies with shank count)
Probe Geometries
2D Matrix (Single Plane)
- Multiple shanks in a linear row (e.g., M4x8: 4 shanks × 8 sites each)
- Captures columnar or laminar data across a cortical area
3D Matrix (Volume Array)
- Shanks arranged in a 2D grid (e.g., M4x4 in a 4×4 pattern)
- True volumetric recording of neural population activity

Compatibility
