ZIF Package
Zero insertion force connector assembly providing a reliable, low-profile alternative to Omnetics for chronic probe implants.
Overview
The ZIF Package (pkg_zif) uses a Zero Insertion Force (ZIF) connector in place of the standard Omnetics nano-strip. ZIF connectors use a locking mechanism — a small lever or cam that, when open, allows the flat flexible cable to be inserted with near-zero force, then locks it securely in position when closed. This protects the delicate probe shank during headstage mating.
Connector Mechanics
- Open: Flip or slide the ZIF latch to release tension
- Insert: Slide the flat flex cable into the connector slot (zero force required)
- Lock: Close the latch — cams clamp cable contacts with consistent pressure
- Result: Reliable electrical connection without the insertion forces that can bend Omnetics pins or damage the probe
Advantages Over Omnetics
| Property | Omnetics Nano-Strip | ZIF Connector |
|---|---|---|
| Insertion force | Moderate (can bend pins) | ~Zero |
| Locking mechanism | Press-fit friction | Positive latch lock |
| Profile height | Low | Very low (flat cable) |
| Reconnect cycles | 100–500 | 1000+ (ZIF rated) |
| Pin damage risk | Present | None |
Applications
- Repeated connector cycling: Preparations requiring daily or weekly headstage removal
- Low-profile implants: Applications where connector height is constrained
- Delicate preparations: When connector force could disturb recordings or implant integrity
- Mouse chronic recording: Lightweight flat cable reduces strain on implant
Channel Counts
ZIF packages are available for 16, 32, and 64-channel A-Series probes.
