X-Series Package

Hardware
Ultra-compact, low-mass connector assembly for chronic silicon probe implants in weight-sensitive small animal preparations.

Overview

The X-Series Package (pkg_xse) provides an ultra-compact assembly designed specifically for chronic implantation in mice and small rats where minimizing implant mass is critical. The X3 assembly reduces the PCB and connector footprint compared to standard packages, lowering total implant weight and skull profile height.

Design

  • Connector: Omnetics nano-strip (standard 18 or 36-pin interface)
  • PCB Footprint: Miniaturized — approximately 40% smaller than standard assemblies
  • Height Profile: Reduced skull profile height for lower center of mass
  • Weight: <0.3g total assembly
  • Shank Compatibility: A-Series and select other probe families

Why Size Matters in Chronic Mouse Preparations

Mice weigh 20–30g. A standard implant (probe + headstage + cement) can represent 5–15% of body weight. Heavy or tall implants:

  • Stress sutures and cause wound dehiscence
  • Shift the animal's center of mass, affecting gait and behavior
  • Are more easily damaged during cage activities
  • Require more dental acrylic to secure, adding further weight

The X-Series Package addresses all of these by reducing the probe assembly component of total implant mass.

Available Configurations

  • X3-16: 16 channels
  • X3-32: 32 channels
  • X3-64: 64 channels
  • X3-H variants: Hybrid flexible cable versions for added stability

Applications

  • Mouse chronic implants: Behavioral neuroscience in freely moving mice
  • Juvenile rat recordings: Weight-sensitive adolescent or pup preparations
  • Long-duration studies: Weeks to months where implant tolerance is paramount
