SmartBox Acquisition System

The acquisition system for SiNAPS probes, carrying 1,024 channels at 30 kHz over the SiNAPS interface — the probe digitizes on the shank, so the system receives data rather than analog signal.

Built around a probe that digitizes itself

A SiNAPS probe carries an active pixel beneath each electrode: amplification, filtering and multiplexing happen on the shank, before anything leaves it. An acquisition system for such a probe therefore has a different job from a conventional one — it is not amplifying and converting, it is receiving an already-digital stream and keeping it intact at full rate.

SmartBox carries 1,024 channels at 30 kHz, 16-bit, over the SiNAPS interface, with USB3 and Ethernet to the computer.

Also takes X-Series headstages

SmartBox accepts the X3R 32, X3R 64 and X6R 128 record headstages alongside the SiNAPS 256 and 1,024 probes, so a lab running both does not need two acquisition systems.

Record only

There is no stimulation mode. That is the trade for handling a fully digitizing probe at full channel count; a protocol that stimulates runs on XDAQ instead.

GPIO

2 analog in and 2 digital I/O — fewer than XDAQ, and worth checking against a protocol that needs several external triggers.
