MR-Compatible Package Series

Hardware
A package built with zero to minimal ferromagnetic material, so the implant can be imaged without distorting the field or heating in it.

Recording inside a magnet

An MR-compatible package is built so that the implant neither distorts the field nor heats in it. The legacy documentation states the criterion plainly: zero to minimal ferromagnetic material. In practice that means the connector — the largest piece of metal in the assembly — is the non-magnetic MRI Omnetics part rather than the standard one.

The legacy documentation calls this the MR-Series. In our catalog it is not a series of its own: MR builds sit inside the series they are variants of — A-Series, Chronic Microdrive, Hybrid and Optrode — which is why you will find MRA16 alongside A16, and MRCM16LP alongside CM16LP.

The catalog

11 builds across four series, 16 to 64 channels. MR_A16 keeps the A-Series DIP pins; every other build connects to an Omnetics-connector headstage. Cable lengths are 21 mm at 16 and 32 channels and 30 mm at 64.

Published weights run 0.17 g to 1.40 g, and they are close to their non-MR equivalents — MR_CM16 at 0.17 g against CM16LP at 0.16 g. Choosing the MR build costs almost nothing in head mass.

The trade

The constraint is on materials, so the choice is made at order and cannot be revisited. If there is any prospect of imaging the animal, the MR build is the cheap decision to make early and an impossible one to make late.
