Vigilance state refers to the behavioral condition of an animal — typically classified as awake, non-REM sleep, REM sleep, or anesthetized — inferred from combinations of EEG power spectra, EMG amplitude, and neural firing patterns.
Why it matters: Neural activity patterns differ dramatically across vigilance states. Analyzing neural data without accounting for state can lead to misleading conclusions. State labeling is essential for chronic recording experiments.
Classification methods: EEG power ratios (theta/delta for sleep staging), EMG amplitude (muscle tone), locomotion tracking, and automated state classifiers using machine learning.
Recording implications: Chronic recordings with surface grids (EEG) and depth probes enable simultaneous state monitoring and neural activity recording.
