Peripheral Nerve Cuff Series

Hardware
Thin-film polyimide arrays pre-curved to wrap a peripheral nerve rather than penetrating it, with each design matched to a nerve diameter at fabrication.

Wrapping instead of penetrating

A cuff interfaces with a nerve from the outside. Nothing is inserted through the epineurium, so the axons are not damaged on placement — the trade is selectivity, since the recorded signal is summed across fascicles rather than resolved within one.

The 12 µm polyimide substrate is flexible enough to wrap, and each design is pre-curved to a nerve diameter during fabrication.

Diameter is chosen, not adjusted

A cuff sized for a larger nerve sits loose and moves; one sized too small compresses. Measure the target nerve before selecting, because the curvature cannot be changed afterwards. Designs are customizable to other diameters.

The sieve variant

Instead of wrapping, a sieve array places holes through the array itself and the nerve is allowed to regenerate through them. Those holes can be seeded with neural growth factor, so axons grow through the microelectrode sites — giving per-site access to regenerating fibres that a cuff cannot resolve. It requires a transected nerve, so it is a different experiment, not a different mounting.

Cuff arrays can also carry holes for a penetrating probe to pass through.
