Multi-Unit Activity (MUA)
Combined action potentials from multiple nearby neurons.
Multi-unit activity (MUA) is the aggregate spike activity from several neurons recorded on a single electrode site. Unlike single-unit activity, individual neurons are not separated - you're measuring the combined firing of a small local population.
Why it matters: MUA provides a fast, robust measure of local neural activity without requiring spike sorting. It's useful for rapid analysis, real-time applications, and situations where single-unit isolation is difficult.
Signal characteristics:
- Frequency range: 300 Hz - 6 kHz (same as SUA)
- Composition: Spikes from 2-10 neurons (typically within 50 µm)
- Measurement: Often quantified as threshold crossings or RMS power in spike band
When to use MUA vs SUA:
- MUA advantages: Fast to compute, no spike sorting required, robust to electrode drift
- SUA advantages: Neuron-specific information, precise spike timing per cell, better for coding analyses
Applications: Real-time brain-machine interfaces, quick assessment of neural responses, population activity monitoring, situations where single neurons are too sparse or unstable for reliable isolation.
