Deepest Site
The deepest site is the position of the electrode site nearest the tip of the shank, measured from the tip in millimetres; at a planned insertion depth it is the deepest point the design records from.
On most linear layouts it is within 50 µm of the tip, so the deepest site and the insertion depth are nearly the same number; on a design with a long bare tip they differ by that length.
With the shallowest site it brackets the depth range a placement covers — the site span — and the pair is what to check against how deep the target structure sits and how thick it is. A rodent hippocampal profile that must cross CA1 and the dentate gyrus wants the deepest site 3 mm or more from the shallowest; a cortical laminar profile wants about 1 mm in mouse and 2 mm in rat. The deepest site cannot be deeper than the shank length allows.
