Bregma is the cranial landmark at the intersection of the coronal and sagittal sutures on the skull surface, used as the primary reference point for stereotaxic alignment of probes and other implants.
Why it matters: All stereotaxic brain atlas coordinates are referenced to bregma. Accurate identification of bregma is essential for targeting specific brain regions during probe insertion surgery.
Usage: The probe's anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) coordinates are measured relative to bregma. Depth (DV) is typically measured from the brain surface or dura.
Surgical context: Bregma is identified visually or by palpation after exposing the skull, then used to align the stereotaxic frame before craniotomy and probe insertion.
